Since the summer of 2014, I’ve been working within the field of digital marketing, making my start doing social media interning for bloggers in the travel industry whilst simultaneously teaching myself the fundamentals of Search Engine Optimisation (abbreviated as SEO). As a testing ground for my new SEO skills, I used my own travel blog which, at its peak in 2017, eventually earned an average of 34,000 visits a month.

By 2016 I was working as the SEO Manager for a UK-based digital marketing agency where I oversaw hundreds of SEO campaigns before then advancing into a Head of Digital Strategy role in the first half of 2018.

My experience today in SEO and Local SEO is based upon my work consulting on hundreds of Local SEO campaigns, both for service-based businesses and product retailers including those within the dental, plumbing, accounting, and other geographically-focused industries.

What is Local SEO?

Local SEO is Search Engine Optimisation for local-area-focused businesses. Rather than trying to rank at the top of Google nationally for phrases frequently used by an ideal customer, such as “emergency plumber”, Local SEO is focused on making a business and their website appear within specific locations, such as “emergency plumber edinburgh”, “emergency plumber glasgow”, and so on.

Local SEO campaigns are normally restricted to one town, city, or country; but they can be done on a national scale for businesses which have regional focuses, such as those businesses which may have offices across each of the southern counties but don’t cover any county further north than Oxfordshire. Those businesses need to establish their local search presence so that their businesses, and probably regional offices too, rank at or near the top of Google for their target keyword phrases (search queries).

SEO for local businesses is reliant on content, citations, and links (what’s the difference between citations and links?). Similarly to regular SEO, the quality of the content, citations, and links is far more valuable than the quantity of each (although, the quantity of citations and links is still highly important), so a business needs to follow an intelligent Local SEO strategy in order to reach their organic growth goals.

Why Businesses Need Local SEO

Without SEO, local businesses may have trouble appearing first for the most important search queries to their business (if a dentist’s practice doesn’t appear at the top of Google for “dental implants” it’s unlikely they’ll attract much organic traffic).

There are other marketing channels open to local businesses, both online and offline, but the most natural source of traffic is undoubtedly via Google search.

For that reason, each business should make search engine optimisation their primary concern as their ambition should be to make sure that their business is the first a searcher sees, rather than a competitor’s website. Leaflets through someone’s letterbox may help to convert some who weren’t considering redoing their driveway, but the percentage will be low.

On the other hand, someone searching for a “driveway contractor” has already decided that they want a new driveway and they’re just looking for the right company to convert with, meaning that they’re red hot and ready to spend money.

With the continual growth in “near me” searches every year (increased by approximately 200% according to Google’s last statistical release in May 2018), local businesses need to make Local SEO a priority.
