Backlink analysis helps businesses to identify any links pointing to their website which may be harmful in any way. The most harmful links are those which have, typically, been paid for (not to be confused with sponsored links). An example of these types of harmful paid backlinks are those bought in bulk from link vendors through marketplaces like Fiverr and Legiit.

Other harmful backlinks include spammy links which use words unrelated to a website’s business in the text link. These normally have adult themes, including commons words found in pornography, erectile dysfunction remedies, and gambling.

What Is Backlink Analysis?

Backlink analysis is the process of reviewing and removing (where possible) harmful links pointing to a website. Whilst Google advises that their search engine algorithm is largely able to detect harmful backlinks, it’s not uncommon to find spammy or hazardous backlinks which, when removed, result in a positive impact in a website’s ranking.

Backlink auditing is primarily recommended for websites where links have been paid for in the past. If a website has a history of paid-for link building, it is advised that these links are audited and, where possible, removed.

Some spammy backlinks are autogenerated by bots which crawl the web in order to create websites which then can either used to do harmful attacks on the visitors to those websites or as a way to earn views for any adverts they may be running.

Other spammy or harmful backlinks may come from competitors paying for harmful backlinks to point at your website. This is an underhanded tactic which Google’s algorithm should ignore, but it’s always best to be proactive and identify these spammy backlinks in advance and work to counter any potential harm they may do.

If a website has previously paid for backlinks and seen their search engine keyword ranking performance decline, these backlinks may be the cause. This is common with websites which have been actively link building for several years, especially those which may have used SEO agencies which use “Black Hat SEO” or “Grey Hat SEO” methods. These methods intend to trick the algorithm, which Google continually updates to counter these methods and make them ineffectual. Many websites which used these agencies have seen their websites lose the majority, if not all, of their traffic during large algorithm updates — but this can (usually) be reversed by identifying the problematic low-quality backlinks and removing them (or disavowing them).
