Since 2014 I’ve been using digital marketing strategies to promote websites and earn the businesses that run them more traffic, leads, or sales which increase their annual revenue.

My digital strategy experience started with the promotion of my own website which, at the time, was earning only a thousand or so visits in a year, mostly from people who knew me. After three years the website was earning an average of 34,000 visits a month, based entirely on the digital marketing strategy I created.

This personal success and growth led me to pursue an agency role where I could further test digital marketing strategies, SEO strategies in particular, on a daily basis. I joined an up-and-coming digital marketing agency based in the UK and eventually transitioned to a Head of Digital Strategy role where I was then able to advise and strategise campaigns for small and medium-sized businesses in several industries.

What is Digital Strategy?

A digital strategy is a bespoke plan for reaching a set goal using digital channels and media, such as Search Engine Optimisation and Content Marketing.

The plan outlines a list of tasks to be completed, which will gradually take a business towards their business goals, whether that’s  an increase in traffic or leads, which will affect an increase in business revenue.

Digital strategies should be tailored to a company’s needs rather than copied directly from one campaign to the next, as each business’ resources and type of content that works will be different for each business.

Whereas a SaaS company may do well from working on increasing brand awareness and referral traffic from software review websites, a local plumber would have more success in increasing search engine visibility for related search queries, like “plumber in Edinburgh”.

Digital strategies should be written with a long-term vision and itemised list of required work, but experienced digital strategists should review the campaign’s performance repeatedly and adjust the strategy depending on what the data is telling them.

Why Businesses Needs a Digital Strategy

Operating a business without a digital strategy is similar to starting a business without a business plan.

Without knowing how to operate the business well or what success looks like, it’s impossible to know whether the business is heading towards profitability or not.

A digital strategy will outline the best digital marketing channels and mediums to reach a business’ ideal customer.

For one business the best digital marketing channel may be Instagram Ads, using high-quality imagery and copy to connect with the target audience.

For another business, product comparison guides may be the best medium and the right digital marketing channel for those could be both Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Referral Traffic (earned via other websites linking to those guides).

Without a digital strategy, the wrong type of content medium or marketing channel may be used. Lengthy guides being created for a target market which prefers review videos created by influencers in that industry, for example, will result in wasted marketing budget and no positive Return on Investment (ROI).
