Digital Marketing Consulting

Helping businesses to increase their brand’s visibility
and earn more traffic, leads, and sales

Hi, I’m Dale Davies

I’m a Digital Marketing Consultant in Edinburgh

Since 2014 I’ve been working within the field of digital marketing, starting with my own self-propelled learning in digital marketing to promote my travel blog. By 2017 my new digital marketing skills had led to that website earning an average of 34,000 visits a month for search queries targeted by huge travel powerhouses, including Tripadvisor, Lonely Planet, Conde Nast Traveler, Expedia, and more.

As my experience increased, so did my expertise, leading to my eventually joining a rising digital marketing agency in the UK as a content writer, followed by my interviewing for (and securing) the role of SEO Manager only a few months later.

During my time as SEO Manager, and eventual Head of Digital Strategy, I’ve developed the digital marketing campaigns of hundreds of small and medium-sized businesses, helping them to earn the increases in brand awareness and traffic required to increase leads or sales.

Today, I continue to advise businesses on the best digital marketing strategies required to scale-up a business, using my first-hand experience of the most important digital channels, including Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), Content Marketing, and Social Media.

What is Digital Marketing?

Digital Marketing, sometimes referred to as Internet Marketing, is a form of advertising which utilises the internet to reach prospective new customers when they’re using their home or office computer, or via their smartphone or tablet computer.

There are several different types of digital marketing, each focused on a different network or channel. Search engine optimisation, or SEO, is digital marketing focused on earning new customers via search engines like Google.

When a prospective customer searches for a service or product an advertising business offers, the aim of SEO is to make sure that the advertising business is featured higher than their rivals in the search results.

Content Marketing focuses on using content, which can differ widely from guest posts (writing an article for publishing on another website under the contributor’s name) to newsjacking (getting a business mentioned in the news for active stories related to their business) and content asset promotion (promoting something useful or interesting that has been published on the business’ website).

There are several other fields and mediums, including Pay-Per-Click Advertising (paying to promote a business, product, or service using adverts online), Social Media Marketing, Influencer Outreach (a part of Social Media Marketing, but works outside of social media also), Email Marketing, Affiliate Marketing, Video Marketing (primarily YouTube SEO), and several more.

Why Businesses Needs Digital Marketing

If a business opens in a remote part of town and doesn’t advertise, will they ever see any people walking through the door?

In an always-online 21st Century, every business needs to either choose digital marketing as their primary source of new and returning customers or make it an integral part of their complete marketing strategy.

Gone are the days where people might ask a friend or neighbour first for a business recommendation. Today the most likely place they’ll look first for a business to supply the service or product they need is Google. The second place is most likely to be social media (where they ask their followers for recommendations). Some businesses, like Amazon, are the immediate go-to for products, but for the most part even those who use Amazon for the majority of their online purchases will shop around, using Google search, on other websites to do price comparisons, making the search engine a basic necessity for any marketing strategy.

Every type of digital marketing interlaces perfectly to help a business reach prospective customers.

For example, someone looking for a new pushchair may ask their friends on Facebook or Twitter for recommendations of reliable pushchairs. They get a list of suggestions from people and then take to Google to research each one further. They check review websites and make a list of any five-star pushchairs which haven’t been suggested yet. From there, they take to YouTube where they watch videos of people explaining how good (or bad) each pushchair is by people who own them.

When they eventually make a decision on the model, they return to Google, this time searching for which one they want and opening multiple websites, including some recommended via Google’s shopping suggestions. They compare the prices and decide to go back to the review sites they checked before and double-check the Pros and Cons one more time. From this review they click a “Check the price on Amazon” button and decide that they’ll make the purchase there because they, the customer, have a Prime account which means they’ll have the pushchair tomorrow.

Twenty-four hours later and our parents-to-be are putting together their brand-new pushchair.

Digital marketing can be felt throughout this entire process.

  • When the customer asked for recommendations on Facebook and Twitter (Social Media Marketing — Businesses promoting themselves on social media to other parents may have raised their brand’s awareness beforehand)
  • When the customer googled the suggestions (Search Engine Optimisation — Businesses at the top of Google will have used SEO to get there)
  • When the customer checked review sites (Content Marketing — Businesses created useful content for their ideal customers to find or posted it on other websites)
  • When the customer watched YouTube review videos (YouTube SEO / Video Marketing / Influencer Marketing — Businesses offering products or sponsorship to popular influencers to review their latest models)
  • When the customer searched for the model to compare prices (SEO and Pay-per-Click Ads — Businesses paid to get to the top of Google, including the Google Shopping Ads)
  • When the customer double-checked the review sites (Affiliate Marketing — Businesses pay a finders fee to websites which promote their business or send it paying customers, including Amazon)

Why You Should Choose a Digital Marketing Consultant Over an Agency

Digital marketing agencies typically have many clients on their books and the majority are focused entirely on increasing the number of clients they have in the name of “scale” and profitability.

Sometimes when agencies do this, the quality of the work they produce goes down. This isn’t because they want to sacrifice the quality of their work to increase profit margins, the problem is that sometimes employees are spread thinly across more clients than they can handle, leading to the occasional cut corner.

As a freelance digital marketing consultant, I choose to only work with a handful of companies at any one time, meaning that I can dedicate my attention and time towards providing businesses with the quality of work they deserve and need to increase their traffic, leads, or sales.
